Portland Roasting Company spends hours each day turning raw beans into delicious cups of joe. And they don’t stop at just grinding them. They also carefully select their beans, pick out the perfect roaster, and even add flavorings to give customers exactly what they want.
But what happens after the roasting process? Where do these beans go? What happens to the leftover husks? The answer is simple: They get turned into compost.
Portland Roasting Company Review How Sustainability and Coffee Make Connections
PORTLAND COFFEE ROASTS (formerly known as PortlandRoastingCompany) is an American coffee roaster based out of Portland, Oregon. Founded in 1994, the company focuses on sustainability. Its mission statement reads “To provide quality roasted coffees to our customers while creating a positive impact on the environment through sustainable practices.” To achieve this goal, they focus on building sustainable relationships and connections with farmers, suppliers, and consumers.
Mission and History of the Company
In 2007, Portland Coffee Roasters became the first company in North America to source 100% of its green coffee from certified organic farms. Since then, the company has expanded its commitment to sustainability by becoming the first coffee roaster in the United States to purchase Certified Organic Coffee. Additionally, Portland Coffee Roasters is the first coffee roaster to create an entirely renewable energy supply through wind turbines at its corporate headquarters.
The first project was the direct shipment from Costa Rica. The success of this project has shown us that we can create a relationship with our customers that goes beyond just selling them a product. We have learned that we need to invest time and resources to help the farmers in developing countries. Our second project was the Finca El Paladar in Guatemala. Here we were able to see the difference in the quality of life between the farmers who had access to electricity and those who did not. We also saw the difference in the quality of the coffee produced when the farmers understood what they were doing. These experiences have helped us understand the importance of investing in the communities around us.
Portland Coffee Roasters is dedicated to improving its social and ecological footprint. Small changes can make a big difference, and constant practice can help them achieve their goals. Ultimately, it‘s an oath they will uphold to continually improve their operations.
Portland Coffee Roasters is a socially responsible company. They source their coffee directly from farmers. Not just does this help them keep costs down, but it helps them build strong relationships with those who grow the coffee beans. By supporting Fair Trade practices, they are helping farmers get fair prices for their crops. They also embrace practices that build a sustainable relationship with the communities. As a result, they are committed to operating with green processes. Small steps can make a big difference, and constant practice can make progress. Ultimately, it is an oath Portland Coffee Roaster will undertake to improve its operation continuously.
Since its founding in 1996, this Portland coffee roaster has actively participated in and supported global initiatives within the coffee landscape. These projects include:
In 2006, I started working at a non-profit called GiveDirectly. We were trying to figure out if we could give money directly to poor families in Kenya. Our first donation was $50,000 to an individual family. That year we gave away $1 million dollars. Since then, we’ve given away over $100 million dollars.
In 2016, we started working with the non-profit organization, Global Good Fund, to help them fund projects around the world. We’ve worked with them before, and knew they were an effective organization. So when they asked us if we wanted to help fund a water well project in Malawi, we jumped at the chance! Our goal is to raise $10,000 USD to fund a water well project to promote proper hygienic practices in Malawi. We’re also partnering with the Human Bean, a local coffee shop, to build a wastewater collection system for 168 coffee farms in Colombia. These systems will allow farmers to collect their waste in a safe manner, reducing the risk of disease transmission.
Things to consider before buying
Buying coffee online is different than buying coffee at your local grocery store. You may not realize it, but there are many differences between the two. For example, if you buy coffee online, you will likely get a higher quality product. If you buy coffee online, it will be delivered right to your door. If you buy coffee from the local grocer, you might have to wait in line for an hour. When you purchase coffee online, you can also save money.
Coffee quality is determined by many factors including the type of bean, the harvest time, the processing method, and the roasting technique. Coffee beans are harvested at different times depending on the region and weather conditions. Harvesting occurs when the beans are still green and unripe. When the beans are picked, they are sorted and graded according to size. Then, they are either dried or roasted immediately. Roasted coffee beans are then ground into a fine powder.
Coffee is grown all around the world, but the best coffee comes from certain regions. These regions have specific weather patterns, soil types, and other factors that help create great-tasting coffee. Coffee roasters buy coffee from farms and cooperatives that they’ve worked with for many years. Relationships. The goal of a coffee roaster is to provide a consistent product to its customers. This means buying high-quality beans directly from the source and working with suppliers to ensure that they’re getting the highest quality beans possible.
Traceable. The beans are traceably sourced from the coffee farms to the coffee shops. A team from this company regularly visits, tours, and audits the farms where they source the beans. Likewise, they regularly visit trusted importers to ask about the origin of the coffee beans. Growers. Good coffee starts with dedicated farmers who grow, harvest and roast the beans.
